How to make coffee without a machine: simple methods explained

How to make coffee without a machine: simple methods explained

Not everyone has an espresso machine or fancy coffee gear at home, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make a great cup of coffee. Whether you’re travelling, your machine’s on the blink, or you just like to keep things simple, there are plenty of ways to brew without high-end equipment. Here’s how to do it, The Roasting Party way.

The Essentials

Regardless of the method, you’ll need:

  • Freshly roasted coffee (ground to suit your brew method)

  • Good-quality water (we always reccomend filtered water)

  • A kettle or a way to heat water

  • A mug (because drinking straight from the kettle isn’t ideal)

Method 1: The Cafetière (French Press)

Probably the easiest way to brew proper coffee at home.

  1. Use a coarse grind—think sea salt.

  2. Add 30g of coffee per 500ml of water

  3. Pour over hot water (just off the boil, around 94°C).

  4. Stir, let it steep for 6 minutes, then plunge slowly.

  5. Serve immediately to avoid over-extraction.

Method 2: The Cowboy Coffee (No Equipment Needed)

For when you’re truly off-grid.

  1. Boil water in a pot.

  2. Add coffee grounds (same ratio as a cafetière).

  3. Let it sit for 4 minutes so the grounds settle.

  4. Slowly pour into a cup, leaving the grounds behind.

  5. It won’t be the cleanest cup, but it's better than no coffee at all... right?

Method 3: The Pour-Over (DIY Version)

No V60? No worries.

  1. Grab a paper towel or clean cloth and place it over a mug.

  2. Add medium-fine ground coffee (about 15g per cup).

  3. Slowly pour hot water over in circles, letting it drip through.

  4. Remove the filter and enjoy.

Method 4: The Cold Brew (No Heat Required)

Takes time, but worth it.

  1. Use a coarse grind and mix 125g of coffee per litre of cold water.

  2. Leave it in the fridge for 12-16 hours.

  3. Strain through a sieve or paper filter.

  4. Serve over ice or with milk.

Final Thoughts

Great coffee doesn’t need expensive gear—just good beans, water, and a bit of patience. Whether you’re making do with a paper towel or brewing cowboy-style, the key is to experiment and find what works for you. Keep it simple, enjoy the process, and as always, let taste be your guide.
